Count Your Spiritual Blessings

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” Ephesians 1:3

Believers have sung “Count Your Blessings” for more than one hundred years. The old hymn is a great prompt for all of us, as humans have a tremendous ability to demonstrate short-sightedness and ingratitude. What comes to mind when you take the time to consider your blessings? Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:19-21 not to store up “treasures on earth,” but to instead store up “treasures in heaven.” These heavenly treasures, your spiritual blessings, are the greatest reason to be thankful.

Alright, so what do you think of when it comes to spiritual blessings? The Scriptures give us plenty of food for thought. Consider some of the spiritual blessings we find in just a few chapters from Ephesians:

  • God “chose us” - 1:4

  • “adoption as sons” - 1:5

  • “redemption through His blood” - 1:7

  • “forgiveness of sins” - 1:7

  • “the word of truth” - 1:13

  • “the gospel of your salvation” - 1:13

  • “the hope of His calling” - 1:18

  • “the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe” - 1:19

  • “His great love” - 2:4

  • God “made us alive together with Christ” - 2:5

  • “the exceeding riches of His grace” - 2:7

  • “peace” - 2:14, 15, & 16

  • citizenship “with the saints” - 2:19

  • membership in “the household of God” 2:19

  • “knowledge in the mystery of Christ” - 3:4

  • strength “through His Spirit in the inner man” - 3:16

  • “Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” - 3:17

  • “the love of Christ” - 3:19

  • “the fullness of God” - 3:19

  • “the power that works in us” - 3:20

This list offers a glimpse into the spiritual blessings Paul is talking about in Ephesians 1:3. All of this is just from three chapters! This list is not exhaustive, either. You can find more spiritual blessings in those three chapters.

Nothing and nobody can take these blessings away from you. Satan has no power over these things. No pandemic can remove these blessings. Financial collapse does not touch your spiritual inheritance. Let us go through life mindful of and thankful for our spiritual blessings.
